I bought this unit in August, 2004 and love it! I probably overpaid as this was “new” technology back then. I bought the 4 year extended warranty from Best Buy and had the DLP bulb replaced twice. Each time the bulb was replaced it was not absolutely necessary but hey, I paid for the extra warranty… I’m using component input cables from my Denon AVR-1905 and am considering upgrading to the AVR-1909 so I can connect to the Samsung with HDMI. I just got a Blu-ray player and am shopping for the AVR-1909 but I’m struggling with a reason to upgrade the TV. This Samsung has been a real winner. I’d like to get a 58″ LCD or Plasma but will probably wait for this DLP to break down. I’s strongly recommend a Samsung DLP to anyone in the market.

While I like the picture, sound and features, within 1 year the TV ceased to work. The warranty repair involved replacing nearly everything, and took nearly 2 weeks. I wasn’t particularly happy dealing with Samsung service. Although I ultimately got a functioning TV back, I still deal with intermittent problems getting the TV to start. This is accompanied by apparently diagnostic sequences of flashing lights on the front. Unfortunately, the Samsung web site is not helpful decoding those lights, and I’m not interested in talking with their unpleasant support folks. I just wait for the day the thing refuses to start, at which point I’ll be done with my Samsung experiment. Not recommended.

so i got this dlp tv about 3 months ago and right away i noticed there are marks from the inside. then i get lines that last for a few hours at a time, in less time between as time went on, and just now the lamp exploded, scared the hell out of me!!! now i get to wait for a replacement lamp from samsung… not looking forward to going through all the bs involved with this, a big mistake buying a samsung dlp. thats what i get for thinking i was getting a good deal. i guess the 1 year warranty is a good thing, but i definitely don’t trust it now, it nearly caused a fire!!!

I bought this TV two years ago to the month and have had no problems with it at all, still has the original bulb. My CC warranty is up in two weeks and i’m wondering whether to renew it or just buy a new bulb online and replace myself. The picture has been great for the past 24 months. I don’t have the TV in a entertainment center so it doesn’t have a chance to heat up, it just sit out in the open so it cools off nicely.

I’ve had mine for three years. It was the product of the year in 2005 when I bought it. The only problem I’ve had (and I haven’t tried to get it fixed) is I can’t use the component inputs because they have some kind of short in them. I use the other inputs instead. Maybe I’ll get the component inputs fixed some day, who knows. But it hasn’t been something I’ve had to do so I haven’t done it. I have been wanting to get a Blu-Ray player but the salesman I spoke to said the 720p output of my TV isn’t the ideal output for Blu-Ray and I would be wasting my money. I need a TV that supports 1080p. Well, I’m not ready for a new TV just yet so the Blu-Ray will have to wait I guess..

Have owned this product for over a year and not one single thing has gone wrong with it.

My husband has been looking at DLP TVs for over 5 years and no matter what new technology has come out, or how they have fixed up the plasma’s and LCDs he has in the end still decided that DLP is what he wants. The picture is just plain better on a DLP than on a plasma and the picture is at least as good as on the LCDs for a significantly lower price. We have owned this TV for almost a year now and have absolutely no regrets. We picked the Samsung brand because every time we ever went looking at DLPs we always felt that the Samsung picture was the best of any other DLP brand. I do want to add that when we got the TV there was 1 pixel that stayed white. I called Samsung’s warranty dept that day (Christmas morning) and they had a local repairman out to our house within a week. He confirmed the problem and ordered the replacement part - was back the day after they got the part, installed it and we have not had another problem. The thing that most impressed me about this warranty service, though, was that Samsung actually called me up about a week after the repair was done to check to make sure that the repair was done to our satisfaction and that the company they had sent to help us was courteous, helpful and professional. Wow! In this day when it seems that business’ motto is now, “the customer is NEVER right” I was extremely impressed with Samsung’s customer care! Thank you Samsung - we are now loyal customers!

I WAS really impressed with this TV, loving it like crazy, great clarity in HD mode. Unfortunately, 14 months into it’s life, the light engine started going bad. Wound up with a 2 inch black stripe on the right side of the TV. Service man said lots of light engine problems with these, not worth it to repair. Thank God I bought a 4 yr service contract!!!

I’ve had this TV for a little over a year now. I purchased it to upgrade from an earlier Samsung DLP in order to get the full 1080p experience for games and movies on my Sony Playstation 3. Overall, I have found the picture quality to be phenomenal. I have tweaked the display settings (but not the service menu settings as some have) to get the right picture for my different sources and room lighting conditions and I couldn’t be happier with the results. br /br /Several months ago however, there was a faint line in the corner of the screen as though something were obstructing the light path from the lamp. Irritated, I ignored it hoping it would just go away. And actually, it DID go away after a week or so! However, now I am worried that something plastic melted, drooped into the light path, and finally sank below the light path. What will the long term reliability look like? I am not certain…br /br /Also, just recently the set has begun turning itself off randomly. About 2-3 times per week with heavy usage. More heat problems?br /br /In my opinion, the new trend towards higher and higher definition displays has resulted in lower and lower manufacturing quality. DLPs do not offer the rock solid reliability of traditional CRT sets, which have had decades to mature as a consumer product. These sets are hot, they are plastic, and they consist of brand-new proprietary chip designs and software on all-digital components manufactured by the lowest-bidder. Your mileage may vary, but caveat emptor.

I (like many others who post) did TONS and TONS of research before shelling out the big bucks to jump into the HDTV pool. 2 years to be exact. Last fall, this 50 inch DLP from Samsung sounded like the way to go. Good reviews, affordable, new color wheel, 1080p (future proof), no risk of burn in, etc.br /br /Went ahead and bought it in May. I was disappointed. SDTV simply looks god awful on this thing. Sharpness, color, you name it, it looks way out of whack. Grainy, dull, ugly. And let’s face it, there’s still a lot of SDTV to be watched out there. Also, rainbowing not totally fixed like product description claimed. Worst of all, quality control issues at Samsung. My set (bought at a brick and mortar) had these watermark like stains running along the top and bottom of the screen. Read a lot about this on other sites, as well as faulty light engines burning out after just several months.br /br /Ended up returning and going w/ the new 50 inch plasma from Panasonic. That set rocks! SDTV looks far better, not so boxy of a set, only a little higher price tag. The trade off is 1080p. The Panny doesn’t have it. But before all you out there start thinking of 1080p as the second coming, I suggest you do a little research into noticeable difference in 1080p, screen size and viewing distance. Unless you’re an avid gamer (I’m not) or like to sit 5 feet from your 50 inch screen, it might not be so special after all.br /br /As far at the Samsung again, HDTV looked very good, but not as good as the plasma. Plasma is just the way to go for HDTV as far as I’m concerned.

I had this tv for a little over a year. The picture quality was very good for it’s time, and the style of this tv is out of this world. As soon as my warranty expired I started having issues with this tv. I hardly ever used it(average use once a week), and took very good care of it. So in my opnion these problems shouldn’t occur so early, and the tv itself now is near unusable. My tv is plagued with green pixels scattered across the screen, and basically you don’t know what you’re looking at anymore. This happens every time I use it, and majority of anything I watch is infested with green pixels. br /br /Trying to find a fix for the problem, I was told time after time, that many people are having issues with this model. That and Samsung needs to send a Tech out to troubleshoot the tv, and I was told not to go this route. I’d suggest if you’d get an HDTV, that you look at other models with a better failure rate.

I GOT THIS TV AT A STEAL FROM A CIRUIT CITY DISCOUNT OUTLET FOR JUST 890 DOLLARS IT WAS STILL NEW AND IN THE BOX.br /I HAVE HAD IT FOR A YEAR NOW AND STILL CAN SAY IT LOOKS AND WORKS BETTER THAN THE NEW SETS IN THE STORES FOR 2500 DOLLARS OR MORE.br /I HAVE MY COMPUTR HOOKED UP TO IT AND THAT IS SO AWESOME I STILL DROOL ON IT WHEN I USE IT THAT WAY MY COMPUTER HAS BLU RAY SO I WATCH BLUE RAY ON IT AND IT IS AWESOME. I HAVE A SAMSUNG HOME THEATER HOOKED UP TO IT AS WELL AND THE ANY NET SYSTEM MAKES THEM WORK AS ONE UNIT THRU THE TV’S REMOTE. WHEN PEOPLE SEE THIS SETUP THEY ALWAYS LOOK DUMBFOUNDED WITH ITS SLICK OPERATION. br /IF YOU CAN STILL FIND ONE BUY ITbr /YOU WONT BE SORRY.br /

My HLP-5085 is 4 years old and still going strong. Over 8000 hours on it and still on the original lamp! I do have a spare ready just in case.br /br /Have had zero service issues with it.br /br /There are, however, two design anomolies.br /br /1. With the integral stand, your component (receiver, DVD Player, etc…) storage options are limited to the funky stand made for this TV.br /br /2. Direct-access to the input ports doesn’t work. It makes programming a remote, especially the “too smart for their own good” Logitech remotes, extremely difficult. Attempting any sort of programming to directly switch to the HDMI, DVI or other ports simply doesn’t work. You have to use the “Cycle” method, and that also fails most of the time. The best thing you can do is put the “Input Next” button and code on the front page of all your device screens so it’s handy.br /br /Other than that I have zero complaints about this TV.br /br /The new 61 LED 1080p units are dropping in price like a rock. Less than $1800 for the top of the line 61″ set!br /br /I’m going to wait until it hits $1500 then I will bite. I’ll probably give this one to my sister as I’m sure it will be still running strong in a year.

I bought this set 11/04 for $3,539.97 from Circuit City. I did EXTENSIVE research before plunking all that $$ down on a TV. The pundits were very clear: for a big high-def TV DLP was the way to go and Samsung was the best at DLP.br /br /Liars!!br /br /The second year I owned it I had all my friends over watching NFL Kickoff Sunday. Just as the kickoff was about to happen on the second round of games –KABOOM! It sounded like a shotgun going off! What it was was the bulb had blown up — that took $300.00 and 5 days to get rectified. OK, I was warned about the bulb issue. I got over it.br /br /After I had the set for 3 years and 1 month suddenly these black pinstripes (10 sets of 8 pinstripes) appeared over the whole screen, just like that. Samsung was as interested in helping me as a US Marine wants to get Osama bin Laden a cold glass of water and a pillow.br /br /So I call a local TV repairman and he came out to have a look. A VERY nice man and quite intelligent as well. He told me that the DMD board went bad and Samsung charges $750.00 for a replacement board, plus $200.00 labor to install. He warned me that in DLP’s the color wheel tends to go bad as well and they are equally as expensive to replace.br /br /I asked him why a 3000+ dollar TV doesn’t last for at least 10 years, like my old trusty Toshiba tube TV? He said that the new technology TV’s - DLP, plasma, LCD - have an average user life of 2-4 years. That’s right, you read correctly — 2-4 years!!!br /br /I figured quickly that buying a new set that is current would cost me ~ $1300.00 and fixing the Samsung would be throwing good money after bad.br /br /br /I went ahead and bought a cheap Sanyo 46″ LCD — looks EVERY BIT as good as the Samsung did in it’s prime. Plus, it was hella easier to set up and such.br /br /Buyer beware — Samsung is really bad.br /br /If you do buy a new HDTV, be sure to put out the extra bucks to get at least 3 years insurance on it, regardless the brand. It’s a little extra money but will be well worth it if your set is a lemon. br /br /It will be interesting to see if the glowing reports on this set are still “glowing” after a couple years passes.br /br /

Samsung service is garbage, I have a 2300$ TV purchased 18 month ago , and I am ready to give it to goodwill.br /I have not been able to find a repair man around Phoenix area, and when I finaly did, he asked for $ 900 to repair it. and that was not sure that would be it, this was only a minimum estimate.br /br /So As far as I am concerned, Samsung is JUNK
