Read the good review on Samsung TV and got it finally from Amazon with a good price. Took 10 days to receive the TV, the TV was ok, while it worked, that was, for one week. Then the TV was dead. That was only the beginning of the nightmare. Called amazon and they do not have any replacement but said I could either have it fixed by Samsung or send it back to amazon. Since it is too much trouble to return, I decided to have it fixed by Samsung. Called Samsung and they offered to have it fixed at the local service center. When they picked it up, they said it will be fixed in one week. Then after two weeks, did not hear from them. I called and they said they just got the parts and is working on it, and should be ready in a couple of days. I called one weeks later, they said, they could not fixed it after replaced many parts. I said then maybe I should get a replacement. Service guy said I need to call samsung for that. I called samsung immediately, and they transfered my call a couple of times, then some custom service said the replacement should be requested by the service center, and they called service center while I waited and them told me, the service guy is working on the repair and if not fixed in two days, they will offer a replacement. I then called the service center in one week, and of course, the TV is not fixed. Again,I called samsung and asked for a replacement. They totally denied the promise to replace the TV, and asked me to wait two more days while the service guys “working on it”, I said I would have to return it to the vender then, the custom service guy said no, the vender will not accept a TV which had been serviced. At this point, I am pissed off already. They made a defective TV, and it is dead after one week of use, I tried with good faith to have it resolved, now service center could not fixed, samsung did not want to replace it and they told me amazon will not take it back! two weeks later I called samsung again, and this repeated once again and they wanted me to wait some more time. I fed up on this and called amazon. Gladly, Amazon could take it back. I called the service center and told them I wanted the defective TV back, and, only at this point, they offered to replace it. i said no, I did not want samsung product anymore. This is the first time I bought a samsung product and it will be the last time too. Buyer be aware, DO NOT BUY SAMSUNG PRODUCTS. Too much hassle to deal with a company with horrible custom service.By the way, one of the time I called Samsung I was put on hold for EIGHTY minutes before I gave up!

I bought this TV year and half ago for $1200 shipped. At that time this was a considerable bargain to get a 50 inch high def TV at this price point. I’m mostly satisfied with this TV. Here’s what I think of it:br /br /Pros :br / - Big screenbr / - True 1080p (1900×1080) resolutionbr / - Cheaper than 50inch LCDs and plasmasbr / - Awesome connectivity (3 HDMI inputs, 1 PC, 2 composites etc)br / - USB port (For firmware upgrades or watching ur pics/or listening to your music). Honestly i’ve used this once in so longbr / - Very good contrast ration (again considering the price point)br / - Slim profile. br / - Super light - Not that you’ll be carrying around TV of this size :-)br /br /Cons :br / - Horrible sound from the in built speakers. br / - Bowing problem. it’s hardly noticeable unless there are horizontal lines on the screenbr / - Terrible Off-axis viewing performance. I don’t care about viewing from side but i’ve put the TV on a 3 foot high table and i watch tv sitting on floor always. It’s not even half as bright/clear from this angle.br / - Limited life of the light bulb (haven’t faced this yet)br /br /Overall, I would say this is a pretty good TV for the money.br /

I purchased this TV for my mother about a year ago. It has blown 3 bulbs in that time. (The same 2-3 hundred dollar bulb thats supposed to last 3-4 years) 1st bulb blew after having the tv for about 5 months. 2nd bulb 4 months after the original bulb was replaced. 3rd bulb 2 months after the second bulb replaced. The TV is never left on or used for more than a couple hours. I’m sure that this was a manufacturing defect of some sort and we just happened to get one of the unlucky TVs. I have owned an HL-S6187W (different model / not slim) for well over a year, love it, and never had a problem with it). The tech company that came out to fix my moms said this was a known problem with this model. If you purchase this TV I strongly recommend getting an extended warranty. After many calls to that company with samsung they are going to replace it with a HL-50A650. Hopefully the next TV will be OK. If we have any problems with it I will never buy another Samsung again.

I bought this samsung DLP tv refurbished from secondact.com for 799 plus shipping. First impressions were that the picture through my xbox was beautiful (switched from crappy old 36 in sdtv). I can actually read the words on my games now :)br /br /The second day I realized that I had the problem that a lot of people had. The screen was bowed or pincussioned… not sure which one. If there’s a perfect horizontal line on the screen, when it gets to either the left or right edge it goes up, creating a kind of smile shaped effect. I was immediately beside myself as I had just spent quite a bit of money on this tv. br /br /The tv has a 90 day warranty from samsung so I began by calling their customer support. I called and got through to an easy to understand American representative very quickly and explained my problem. Even though it’s refurbished all i had to do was fax in my receipt and tomorrow I will be calling to set up an appointment for a technician to come directly to my house to fix this problem. I will update this after the tech comes to see what happens but the customer support from samsung was amazing and I love that i don’t have to ship out my tv somewhere and not get it back for a month as other manufacturers might. br /br /If that gets fixed perfectly the only thing wrong with this tv is the audio. If turned up to normal to high-normal listening range it has a definite buzz, which the technician may also fix when he gets here. This isn’t a huge deal to me because for the price i payed i wasn’t looking for great audio without getting outside speakers anyways. br /br /If on a budget this is a great tv to get as i see it!br /GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE

I’ve had it for about 2 months now and it is an Awesome TV! My only gripes are that shadows or dark areas of subjects on the screen tend to black out instead of shadow, the other is that is has a lamp instead of LED, but hey, at $999 it still earns 5 stars. Other than that the picture is AMAZING. The TV has a slim bevel which is VERY nice, color is vibrant and very sharp. The TV’s light engine is not noisy at all. High def signals (from Xbox360 or satellite box) looks so incredibly crisp. The TV does not have the bowing issue I have read about.br /br /The sound from the TV is not good but I never bought it for the sound (I have a sound system).

  • 6 Nagashima

Absolutely my worst experience with TV’s - ever. Sure, the picture is generally great, but too many problems and too many service calls. I got sucked in based on the glowing reviews and paid dearly for my mistake. My HPT5064 is barely 14 months old and the power supply board needs replacement!!! Of course it went just after the warranty had expired. No surge, no brownout - just gone. I called Samsung when it went dark and they kindly advised their factory authorized company, which was to contact me to schedule the appointment. Well, 3 days later I get a call informing me that a technician will be there in 5 days. Count that: we’re up to 8 days. The guy shows up, tests the unit and promptly informs me that I need a new power supply board. Total estimate: $360 plus tax. So here I am, faced with the attractive option of investing almost $400 in a unit which has already given me multiple audio and picture ghosting problems and which has never worked with HDMI. Why bother — I decided to cut my losses, paid the guy his minimum $81 fee and will move on to a Sony, Pioneer or another reliable brand. Will sell this piece of junk to a refurbishing shop and will never look at another Samsung again.

After doing TONS of research and going back and forth on 1080 vs. 720, I went for this beauty. I don’t have a Blue-Ray player and I don’t own a PS3 (yet) so I couldn’t take advantage of 1080. Broadcast HD TV is 720 anyway. I have owned this set for about 10 months and at the time the same size LCD was $500 more and the screens on the LCD’s of the day just were not as bright as plasma IMO.br /br /Best thing to do, go to your local electronic store, compare TV’s side by side and then buy it on Amazon. First of all Amazon rocks! Customer service is awesome. 2 weeks after we bought the TV it dropped $150 and when I called Amazon they gave me the difference back! This is only good for up to 30 days after your purchase date. No tax for us in CA, and Free white glove delivery. TV came on time, delivery company called me to schedule an appointment for delivery. The delivery guy brought the TV in and help set it up and even cleaned up the mess. br /br /TV was a breeze to setup. I have HD Comcast cable running in via composite cables, a Wii via composite, a media center PC into the VGA port and a DVD player plugged in through one of the HDMI pots. Couldn’t get coax to work directly connected to the TV but no big deal, I watch it through my cable box anyway.br /br /I read online that you had to “break in” a plasma or you would have burn in early on. I had the TV’s settings dialed in to my room brightness but still kept it at 50% brightness. Even at that setting the TV was still VERY bright! Yes it is a plasma TV and YES there will be burn in at some point. After playing Guitar Hero III for hours with friends yes there is a ghost of the game burned into the screen. Flip the channel to any HD FULL SCREEN channel and in about 10 minutes, its all gone. br /br /Early on we would run the anti-burn feature on the TV when we went to bed to keep burn in from being permanent. Set the sleep timer for 30-60 min, and start the scrolling anti-burn feature. The next morning when we turned on the TV, it was all gone.br /br /All in all, I love it!br /br /PROS:br /Great picturebr /Great colorbr /Looks good on or offbr /Sound is impressive for such small speakersbr /Lots of inputsbr /br /CONS:br /Burn in after gaming or when watching sports (score board or news ticker)br /Plasma uses alot of energy vs LCDbr /Plasma puts off alot of heat for a TV. This is a very good TV for the price! My mom has a Samsung and spent over $3,000.00 on hers, and the quality of this one definitely outshines hers! I just upgraded to an HD cable box and the picture is very good. I gave this 4 starts because burn in and ghosting happens fairly easy on this TV. You have to be VERY careful if you are watching channels that have a logo on it for more than 40 minutes. I even have the contrast/brightness/color, etc. all below 50. My kids love to watch Nick, and I had the Nick logo stuck on my TV for days… (after watching for only 1 hour) Another time I was switching DVD’s and my DVD player was on and the word “Pioneer” was burned into the TV in bright pink for 3 days; it was left on screen for no longer than 2 minutes. Other than that…great deal! Great picture!

There’s no contest, and it’s a crying shame that these sets are a fast dying breed. 1080p, 120hz, HDMI 1.3 support, and an inherently faster refresh rate than ANY LCD panel produced and you’ve got by far and beyond the absolute best HDTV to reproduce any blu-ray that exists.br /br /Having seen blu-ray on 120hz LCDs, I quickly developed a distaste for the image which due to the problems inherent in digital displays, the look and feel of film had completely disappeared. Pirates of The Carribean: At World’s End, looked like it was shot with a nice HD Camera and forgot to undergo the post production processing that makes it film.br /br /However, when it comes to watching HD Video (like HD off-air broadcasts or HD Satellite TV) this set is no slouch. Watching college football on ESPN or CBS will make you cry and almost forget about buying season tickets. The color palette is incredible and the blacks are BLACK, not dark gray or charcoal.br /br /For reference sake, I’m using a Dishnetwork ViP 211 HD Satellite receiver, a Pioneer BDP-51FD Blu-Ray player (best you can by for under $1000, I promise you) and both are jacked in with Accell Ultra Pro AV 2m HDMI 1.3 cables, capable of slinging 10.2 Gbits per second, just like the Monster Cable 1000 HDMI cables for 3 times the price.br /br /I have no regrets. You can take your LCDs and shove ‘em!!

After nearly 5 months of ownership, I have yet to find a flaw. The picture is far brighter than most DLP’s I’ve viewed and will rival LCDs and plasmas, minus the high power consumption and the heat generated by these flat screens. If you take the time to fiddle with the audio controls and customize it, the built-in speakers can also provide good sound (although if you had a tv this good, you’d really want to pair it with at least a 5.1 surround system). I hope Samsung continues to evolve the DLP LED series because from what I’ve seen, this is a truly worthwhile technology.

I bought this TV several months back from Vann’s for $1200 including (no)tax and delivery. Price was good, delivery was prompt and the TV has been free of defects. The picture is fantastic when the scene is bright. Outdoor documentaries in HD are matchless. However dark scenes sometimes appear too dark. Though last night I watched The Departed with the TV set on Dynamic and the picture was quite outstanding throughout. I wish I could give it 4 stars instead of 3, but I can’t seem to make that editorial change.

When the tv was working, I generally liked it purely because of its size and price. Getting a good brightness and color setting for the screen is challenging. There is a very narrow range of view angles for optimal quality - directly in front of the screen and near eye-level. Otherwise, the picture is dim. It’s frustrating to see such a big difference just from standing versus sitting in the same spot. I haven’t had any other DLPs to compare this to.br /br /I can’t comment on HD. SD is acceptable for normal programming, although I’m sure HD would look snazzy. Sports can be frustrating to watch at this size in SD, though.br /br /The #1 problem with mine is that the volume spontaneously goes all the way up to 100, and unplugging the set for several minutes is the only solution. This happened within an hour of getting it off the truck, but then didn’t happen again for maybe a month. After it had happened a few times, I called Samsung for repairs. After 2.5 weeks in the shop, it just came back today - worse than before. I had it on for ~15 minutes at a time, then the volume cranked up and it had to be unplugged for several minutes. So for now, its only use is as a big expensive digital photo viewer. br /br /It’s probably a bad sign that while this tv was in the shop for two and a half weeks, I really didn’t miss it.

When shopping for a new TV, I went in to several stores to stand back and pick the best picture out of dozens of units. I was drawn to the Samsung sets without exception. I’m so happy with my purchase and still believe Samsung has the best picture available at this time. We’ve been using our set for a few months, so I waited to write a review because of issues that others had after a short period of time. I guess we’ve been lucky because we had no technical issues. Also, I highly recommend Vann’s due to low price (I was able to purchase a $150 universal remote for only $50 with the purchase of this unit) and good service. Vann’s lowered the price of this set by $100 after I purchased, and I was credited for the difference in price. br /br /I’m intentionally leaving all the technical information out of my review because I think that has been covered elsewhere, and I want to empasize the fact that this set can be used by anyone who doesn’t understand a lot of the technical terms anyway. Setup is quick, easy, and painless.br /br /We have used everything from a 10-year-old VCR to a Nintendo Wii with our new Samsung TV and are absolutely thrilled with the picture quality. I keep telling my husband that there are people in our living room! :) The picture quality in HD is truly that realistic. We watched the July 4th fireworks on three different channels (it was raining in our area that night) and now see no reason to leave the house next year because it can’t get any better than what we saw on our set. br /br /Depth of the set was not an issue for us, and I’m glad we chose this unit. We have all of the accessories (HD receiver and DVD recorder from Comcast, DVD/VCR recorder, etc.) to store anyway, so no big deal. br /br /I highly recommend this unit to anyone looking for a lot of bang for the buck and crystal clear picture quality. br /
